What does it mean to be ethical? It means to have morals and to be able to do the right thing, even if it comes at a cost for yourself. Ethical people can always be counted on to tell the truth, with out having to twist them in any way. These are the people who are always honest, and don't think about the "reward" for telling the honest truth, because by telling the truth that is the true reward for them. If an ethical person found out that their friend was talking to a stranger on the internet, they would flat out tell their friend's parents, even if that meant putting the friendship in jeopardy. They would do this because they know in the long run, they would be helping the friend from making bad choices in the future.
With so many people in this world, now using technology, it's hard to tell who the good and bad people are, because of the ease to "hide behind our computer" now. Especially when it concerns our friends meeting strangers on the internet. An ethical person understands this, and knows how easy it is for someone to hide their "true" identity, and while it may be hard to judge whether someone actually is good or bad, they still tell their friend's parents that they are talking to a stranger, just because it is the right thing to do. They understand that the stranger might actually be a great person, and that they were wrong to judge them, but since they didn't know the truth, they were safe and told, before it was too late. What I' m trying to get across is this; if someone that is ethical and has high morals discovered their best friend talking to stranger on the internet, they wouldn't even think twice about going and telling their parent. This is not to get their friend in trouble by any means, this is to get their friend help. The reasoning behind this is simple, an ethical person is doing what's best for their friend, protecting them with any means possible!
How does ethics apply to journalism? Well, without ethics we wouldn't be able to trust any of the news we hear! True, some reporters may not be telling the whole truth and nothing but the truth. But usually that is because that is the story they heard, and 90% of them don't mean any harm when reporting the news, and yes I did make up that statistic by myself, but I didn't mean any harm with it. Ethics in journalism is getting both sides of the story, without expressing your opinion or changing the story to make it more interesting for yourself and the readers. It even comes down to the pictures. Pictures are meant to show what actually happened or is happening, they are not meant to make something look better or worse than it actually is, whether that is happy or sad.
Ethics in news is essential to having accurate and resourceful news. With out ethics we wouldn't be able to rely on what we hear on the news, or read in the newspaper, it would be almost as beneficial to just listen to your neighbor if we didn't have ethics for our news. I' m pretty sure there is no one out there who would like to have news that was tampered with to make it more appealing, then hearing the honest truth. Basically, with out ethics our news would be NOTHING. But, like I said earlier not all news is ethical but there is a good chance that the news your hear, or read in the newspaper, is.
What are your thoughts on ethics?
Until next time,
Chloe
