Journalism has come such a long way since it first started in 1690. In 1690, the first newspaper led to the arrest of the publisher. Today journalists are protected by the First Amendment in the Bill of Rights stating, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

The First Amendment is what makes the American press possible. Journalism is the only business protected by the Constitution. Without the First Amendment journalists wouldn't be able to share their opinions. If freedom of press wasn't guaranteed journalists would not be able to share all of the information they do today. Today, they can share everything from local news, international news, to who is running for office, and what politicians are or are not doing in office. I believe that the First Amendment is necessary. Journalists play a very important part in many people's lives. Without journalists, and them being able to tell us everything, we would hve to rely on the "gossip", and what our neighbors tell us, without ever getting the real, or whole story.
Technology has come such a long way since the first newspaper was published. In the beginning many publications had to be put together by hand, with each letter being placed on a sheet one by one. Then the typewriter came along, and if the writer made one mistake, or spelled a word wrong, they would have to start the whole publication over again, because there was no backspace button. Today, we are able to use the computer to complete reports. We can use the internet to find information, not just about our local area, but pretty much anywhere around the world. We also have the lovely backspace key, which I use often, and wouldn't know what to do without it.

What do you think about how far journalism has come over the years?
Until next time,
