07.00 Starting Your Project

Before I started my quest into learning about journalism I really didn't know what to think about a journalist. I mean yes I knew that they wrote some articles but I really didn't know everything that went into being a journalist and let me tell you it's a lot! Journalists have so much more to do then it seems, I really don't even know how they sleep at night! Before this class I had no clue of journalist ethics, I always thought that the interviewee might just give a list of topics that they don't want to discuss and that was it. But boy was I wrong! I did at least understand the difference between impartial reporting and opinion reporting. I have always been somewhat interested in a journalism career but more so in the field of fashion and lifestyles.

My definition of a journalist has definitely changed. They do so much more than just write an article. They have to do so much research that seems never ending. And even after the article is written even more research has to be done as follow up. Now I believe there are so many purposes for journalism because there are so many different types. In some articles you are informing others but in some you are merely expressing your opinion on a topic. A journalist might be informing on a wide range of topics as well from local and state news to fashion and food!  I still have an interest in journalism but still not in the field of news reporting unless it's E! News, haha. I think that to be a journalist you really have to love what you're reporting so that you can have the best story possible, so local news wouldn't be right for me.

Diane Sawyer began her career as a weather reporter fro WLKY-TV in Louisville, Kentucky in 1967.   She stayed until 1970 when she began her new position on the staff of Presidential Press Secretary Ron Ziegler.  She remained in this position until 1974 when she began assisting the former President Richard Nixon with his memoirs.  In 1978 she transitioned to broadcast journalism when she joined CBS News as a reporter in the Washington bureau.
Other positions that Diane Sawyer has held in her distinguished career are as follows:
1978-81             CBS Evening News (State Department correspondent)
1981-84             CBS Morning News (co-anchor)
1982-84             CBS Early Morning News (co-anchor)
1984-89            60 Minutes (Sawyer became the first woman correspondent and co-editor of this flagship program)
1989-1998       ABC Prime Time Live (co-anchor with Sam Donaldson)
1999 – 2009    ABC Good Morning America (co-anchor)
2010 – present           ABC World News  (Following retirement of Charles Gibson)

Diane Sawyer has established herself as a highly respected figure where her viewing audience admires her for her personality and her talents as an investigative reporter.  She has her own unique style when conducting interviews with personalities and leaders and with her smarts asks the tough questions her audience expects.
Diane Sawyer’s current position with ABC Prime Time Live is a culmination of a long career where she began as a weather reporter in a TV regional market to her continued progression to her current position.  In her current position she has both a national and international presence before her audience.  In her current position, as in previous positions, she still has to conduct the necessary background research on the topic under investigation or person being interviewed, she must be exhaustive in double checking all of her facts and verify that all sources used are reliable prior to making her presentation to her viewing audience each week.

Diane Sawyer is at the top ranking in her profession due to her formidable blend of intelligence, personal drive, and determination to continually excel.   To reach this level of excellence takes a tremendous level of effort.  It takes exhaustive research on the key issues of the subject matter, it takes perseverance to develop the right questions to ask on the subject matter, and relationship with the people who assist in doing the research.  A person must only present facts or information that can be verified with a trustworthy source. At last there must be a peer review with others to ensure all the facts are valid, verifiable and that the presentation is free from any personal bias as much as possible.

What are your thoughts on Diane Sawyer?

Until next time,
Chloe
